Kate Moss Debuts as the Face of Donna Karan’s Spring 2025 Campaign in a Pair of Glossy White Slingback Pumps https://footwearnews.com/fashion/designers/kate-moss-white-slingback-pumps-donna-karan-spring-2025-campaign-1234765563/ Thu, 06 Feb 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234765563 Kate Moss is the new face of Donna Karan, appearing in a sultry campaign spotlighting the veteran designer’s Spring 2025 collection.

The legendary New York fashion brand has been investing in its revival since its relaunch last spring. Moss is just the latest ’90s supermodel to be tapped to appear in a Donna Karan campaign. This follows up the Fall 2024 Campaign entitled “Reflections on Women,” which featured the likes of Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova, and Amber Valletta.

“Donna Karan New York expands its vision of iconic timelessness by featuring Kate Moss for
the Spring 2025 Campaign. A legend who has captivated the world over decades, Moss embodies the enduring spirit and identity of the brand today,” a press statement reads. Photos shot by Craig McDean see Moss posing in chic white and neutral-toned pieces from the collection, with an earthy, light-filled room as the backdrop.

The model can be seen wearing an elegant white linen suit, a curve-hugging halter dress, a chunky knit off-the-shoulder sweater paired with a chic skirt in the same warm ecru shade, and glossy white slingback pumps. Another look sees Moss in a sheer white tank top seamlessly tucked into sophisticated white trousers, with a long coat on top. An oversized white bag completes the monochromatic look.

Pieces throughout the collection, including the footwear, are adorned with reflective gold hardware inspired by looks from the brand’s archive. In addition to white slingbacks, shoe styles range from black leather and gold-embellished backless sandals set on walkable block heels, pointy flats in a shimmering gold metallic finish, and strappy black patent peep-toe pumps.

“It was great working with Donna Karan New York again and shooting with Craig McDean is always fun, he is like family,” Moss said of the collaboration. “To me, Donna Karan has always Been about effortless glamour and luxury with a little bit of an edge and this collection really captures all of that.”

John Fluevog Reflects on Overcoming Industry Challenges & Never Quitting https://footwearnews.com/fashion/designers/john-fluevog-55-years-business-challenges-1234763565/ Tue, 04 Feb 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234763565 John Fluevog talks the highs and lows of the ever-changing shoe market over his 55 years in business.]]> John Fluevog has seen more of the ups and downs of the shoe industry than most.

The designer first started off in retail in 1970 as a partner in the Canadian shoe store Fox & Fluevog. Ten years later, he went out on his own and began producing his now-famous footwear line, known for avant-garde, quirky designs worn by generations of music and style icons, from Madonna and Alice Cooper to Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Now, though, may be one of the toughest times yet, he told FN last month.

“People are losing confidence in their leaders. People are losing confidence all around,” he explained, adding that it’s changed what customers want. “In the fashion world, there’s a simplicity that’s come into play, where they don’t want anything fancy or overdone, over-designed. I’m trying to put together this product that is all those things.”

Last fall, for instance, he introduced his first sneaker — the DDFT Velocity Prism — a style for men and women featuring a multi-traction rubber sole and soft wool-blend knit upper. At $200, it hit a lower price point than his average range of $300 to $500 and departed from his typical aesthetic by offering an everyday wardrobe item.

Here, Fluevog opens up about taking career risks and finding unexpected creative talents.

Looking back, what were your biggest turning points?
“I had a couple of ‘aha’ moments that were born out of downturns in the business. I realized that if I didn’t start doing my own product, I didn’t have much of a hope to exist. And it didn’t seem very interesting to me just to be buying other people’s products and reselling them. I was selling so much Dr. Martens at one time, it frightened me. I realized that I was selling Dr. Martens, not John Fluevog. I made the bold move of stopping when they were selling. It started out of a really hard time financially and thinking, ‘What am I going to do now?’ So I took the bold move and did some really very unusual things, and [my shoes] sold.”

Were there other major challenges along the way?
“As the company grew, I had to let things go, and that’s a bit of a challenge, because you do something yourself, and of course, you think you can do it better than everybody else. As a small entrepreneur, growing and letting all these different sections go, that’s challenging.”

How do you think you’ve changed as a designer through the years?
“I never started this business thinking I was a designer. It never occurred to me that I could even design anything. I didn’t grow up in a design family. I’ve had no art background. In fact, I’ve never been to university. Big picture? The company has been a vehicle for me to understand myself and to understand my own creativeness. I say that to encourage others because I think we’re all far more creative than we think or believe. It’s been a big journey for me, and I don’t feel it’s over. In some ways, I’m just starting.”

What was your first shoe hit?
“A turning point for me was when I did my Angel soles. The messages and stories that I put into that
sole have helped fuel the company all these years.”

Why did you want to keep the company privately owned?
“I’ve looked around at other public companies with a bit of envy. But I never wanted people telling me what to do. I’m very happy that I don’t have any partners. I’m very happy I’ve never had money put in the company. If I was proud of anything, I’d say I’m proud of that. I’m also very proud that I’m probably the longest-standing retailer on Prince Street in New York.”

Was there ever a time you wanted to quit?
“One day I did. That was back in the 1980s, when I had that epiphany and I started doing my own shoes. That’s what changed it. When you start doing your own thing, it suddenly becomes very personal. I just kept running toward this thing the whole time and started to believe that what I was doing was of value and there was a place in the market. I didn’t think about stopping. I still don’t think about stopping. I don’t want to quit because, fundamentally, I really love what I do.”

Sneex Founder Sara Blakely to Be Honored By National Women’s History Museum at Women Making History Awards Gala https://footwearnews.com/fashion/designers/sara-blakely-sneex-national-women-history-museum-honoree-1234760220/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 17:46:08 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234760220 Sara Blakely, founder of the sneaker-heel fusion brand Sneex, is slated to be honored by the National Women’s History Museum at the Women Making History Awards Gala held on March 20 at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. The event “celebrates extraordinary, trailblazing women who have made a profound contribution to society.”

Additional honorees include Dr. Opal Lee, Shirley Welsh Ryan and Mattel, which is the recipient of the inaugural Evelyn Y. Davis Women Making History Corporate Changemaker Award; Mattel EVP and chief brand officer Lisa McKnight will accept that award. Journalist Norah O’Donnell will host the event and Meryl Streep will serve as the honorary chair of the gala.

“We are incredibly proud to be celebrating this incomparable group of honorees at our gala. They have each made indelible contributions to society that will endure for generations to come,” said Susan D. Whiting, chair of the NWHM Board of Directors. “We are looking forward to commemorating the remarkable achievements of Sara, Opal, Shirley, and Mattel at what promises to be an inspiring and unforgettable night.”

Sneex founder Sara Blakely

Blakely’s latest brainchild Sneex hit the market in 2024 and earned the Launch of the Year award at the 38th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards, where her daughter Tepper was on hand to accept the trophy. The entrepreneur, known previously for founding the massively successful brand Spanx, stepped outside the box with a footwear design that adds a stiletto heel to a sneaker silhouette, ideal for those who want the elevation of heels but the comfort of sneakers. Gayle King has become one of the biggest celebrity fans of the shoe, having stepped out in multiple pairs since Sneex debuted. And Kathy Bates wore a pair to the Golden Globes this month.

Is Balenciaga’s New ‘Barefoot Shoe’ the Brand’s Most Daring Design Yet? https://footwearnews.com/fashion/designers/balenciaga-barefoot-zero-shoe-1234737800/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 16:50:46 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234737800 Balenciaga continues to defy the norms of footwear with the debut of the Zero shoe as part of its fall 2025 collection.

Previewed Monday via a lookbook styled as “internal use” photographs shot on Balenciaga creative director Demna’s phone, the upcoming range included brand staples such as puffed-up, oversized silhouettes and extreme interpretations of everyday garments.

On the footwear front, the fall selection included pre-distressed loafers, stiletto sneakers and a collaboration with orthopedic specialist Scholl. But the pair that has the internet buzzing most is a barely there unisex shoe known as the Zero.

According to Balenciaga, the Zero “distills footwear to its essence” by taking the barefoot shoe concept to the max. Secured only by a heel cup and a notch at the big toe, the 3D-molded shoe is composed entirely of EVA foam and is essentially a thin, wearable sole rather than a shoe.

The Zero was worn by models both with and without socks and was previewed in various muted colorways including black, white, tan and brown. Additional close-up shots shared on social media by Balenciaga sneaker designers Beini Qian and Adrian Perrot Garin, revealing an anatomical foot imprint on both the outsole and inside of the shoe. The brand’s logo appears on the medial side of the big toe.

The shift toward a barefoot shoe concept is a considerable change for the French fashion house, which has spent the last decade inflating sneakers to bulbous proportions, beginning with 2017’s polarizing Triple S model. After introducing its most exaggerated sneaker yet, the 10XL, in April, the brand dialed it down with the slightly more subtle 6XL in November. Now, the new Zero represents a move in the complete opposite direction.

Retail pricing for the Balenciaga Zero has not yet been confirmed. The slip-on shoe is currently available for preorder from select Balenciaga locations. Readers can find more looks at the new design below.
